Le Grand Bornand is a long established alpine village which has preserved its character and traditions well.
It has a genuine year-round life based on farming and there are no huge holiday developments in the resort. Its ancient wooden chalets are mostly used as farms and give an authentic feel to the place.
The village is divided into two distinct areas. The village of Le Grand Bornand, which lies in the bottom of the valley at 950m and Le Chinaillon, which lies on a higher plateau at 1300m.
Le Grand Bornand village has the church, the Mairie and a good range of shops including two small supermarkets. The market is held each Wednesday morning in the village square. The main Tourist Office is here and there are some good bars and restaurants.
The ice rink is here as well as most of the cross-country skiing. There is a high-capacity gondola which reaches the heart of the skiing and a smaller one which accesses some sunny slopes.
Most of the alpine skiing is based in the upper hamlet of Chinaillon which has an old village and a newer part specially developed for skiing. Here there is a small, well-stocked supermarket and several shops.
There is a Tourist Office where you can get all kinds of information as well as ski passes/insurance etc. Both of the ski schools, the ESI and the ESF, have offices here.
Chinaillon is where most of our chalets are located.
